The Budget Buy: Sonia Kashuk vs. NARS

11/19/13

Hello!!!! (waves vigorously) There's nothing I love more than finding a cheaper/ comparable option to one of my favorite higher end products. I have recently fallen in love with NARS Velvet Matte lip pencil in Cruella. The perfect slightly deeper tomato red that glides on the lips and sits there beautifully. The pigmentation and creaminess is just pure love and this has definitely become one of my go to reds. A couple of weeks ago I was doing my weekly jaunt to Target (ok so maybe daily) and I spied a lip pencil from SK that not only looked exactly like my NARS one but its pretty much named the exact thing, Sonia Kashuk Velvety Matte Lip Crayon, ummmm Dupe?

(NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella, SK Velvety Matte Lip Pencil in Rosey Nude)
 (NARS Cruella)
(SK Rosey Nude)

As far  as packaging goes they are pretty much identical. Same pencil style that has to be sharpened (which is slightly annoying). The consistency is similar as well. Both go on smoothly and feel the same on the lips. The NARS pencil is slightly more pigmented and opaque where as SK has to be applied twice to get the same opaqueness. The NARS color selection is beautiful and there are plenty of options to chose from. SK not so much, this was the deepest color option they had and they rest where pretty much pinky nudes. The color is also different, which I am perfectly OK with because I love them both. NARS Cruella is a richer true red that just pops against my skin tone. SK has a lot more orange and pink in it which for me makes the perfect spring and summer red. Wear time? NARS completely wins. Cruella will stay put on my lips until I eat or drink where as Rosey Nude will begin to fade slightly after about an hour. The Sonia Kashuk lip crayon is definitely comparable to the NARS but not a spot on dupe. Both still have a special place in my makeup collection.

Have you found any dupes lately?

Tanesha
